Good Faith Estimates & The No Surprises Act

New Protections From Surprise Medical Bills

You may have heard stories from friends or in the news about surprise or balance bills from health care providers. Starting in 2022, a new law went into effect – the federal No Surprises Act, which protects patients from the financial shock and trauma of surprise and balance billing.

The No Surprises Act aims to help you (as the client) better understand your health care costs in advance of care in order to minimize unforeseen or “surprise” medical bills. The law requires that all healthcare providers provide a Good Faith Estimate, which is a formal document that shows the list of expected charges for items or services from your provider or facility. The Good Faith Estimate ensures that you are aware of the full charges of services prior to your appointment.

What is Surprise Billing?

Surprise billing occurs when patients receive unforeseen bills after receiving care from an out-of-network provider or facility, often without prior knowledge of their out-of-network status. Balance billing can occur when a healthcare provider charges you the difference between their fee and what your insurance covers, even after your insurance has paid its share.

Ultimately, this legislation aims to offer you greater transparency and peace of mind when it comes to understanding your healthcare costs upfront, thereby minimizing any unexpected financial stress.

Before the initial session, I provide my clients with a Good Faith Estimate, which formally outlines the expected charges for services or items provided, giving you the opportunity to fully comprehend the financial aspects of your care. Furthermore, I want to emphasize that I deeply respect your financial autonomy and will never adjust your fee without your explicit verbal and signed consent. Your trust and comfort are paramount to me, and I am here to support you every step of the way.

In alignment with the spirit of the No Surprises Act, it is my commitment to you to prioritize transparency and clarity regarding fees and services. I firmly believe that you deserve to have a clear understanding of the financial aspects of your therapy journey from the very beginning.
